Pacific women call for stronger regional processes to accelerate equality

The 11th Triennial Conference of Pacific Women held at SPC headquarters in Noumea from 16-20 August 2010 called for stronger regional multi-sectoral processes and mechanisms to accelerate the achievement of equality between women and men in the Pacific Island region.

The call came in response to a regional report and presentation by SPC showing that while there are good examples of progress, overall implementation of commitments to gender equality has been slow in many areas over the past 15 years, and that national and regional institutions for gender equality continue to face significant challenges in their work.

Breaking the silence – controlling STIs in the Pacific

Wednesday 25 August, Noumea, SPC – For all the beauty and extraordinary richness of the Pacific, the region also holds some sad records.  Recent surveys on HIV and other STIs (sexually transmitted infections) in the region show that on average, one in four sexually active young people in the Pacific have an STI, with a chlamydia prevalence in youth of up to 40% – among the highest rates in the world*.

In response to these disturbing findings, the Pacific Regional STI Working Group was established to review the situation and provide evidence-based recommendations to countries to help reduce the prevalence of STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis. The Working Group comprises technical specialists from the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Oceania Society for Sexual Health and HIV Medicine (OSSHHM).

SPC - FACT supports training for farmers in Central Vitilevu (Fiji)

Friday 20th August 2010, Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), Suva, Fiji Islands - Driving the narrow road to Nakavika village in Namosi Province (Fiji Islands) is the experience of a lifetime. The road winds through beautiful but rough terrain as it climbs into the interior of Viti Levu.
The village lies about 75 kilometres from the main highway. For decades farmers have travelled this road to transport their produce to market in Navua Town.
But now taro and cassava exporters have begun to buy produce from these farmers in the village.

Preparatory Workshop for UN Biodiversity Summit

Thursday 26th  August 2010, Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), Suva, Fiji Islands - A regional preparatory meeting for the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity was organized in Nadi, Fiji from the 16th to 18th of August 2010 by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme.


Cenon Padolina - Regional Forest Resource Officer represented the SPC’s Land Resource Division during the meeting and provided technical advice on issues pertaining to forest and agriculture biodiversity.

Directors of Public Health to review adolescent health and development

18 August 2010, Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) – Directors of Public Health will meet to discuss practical ways to effectively implement Adolescent Health and Development (AHD) programme activities in 10 Pacific countries. Key to this effective implementation is mainstreaming AHD issues – ensuring that they are addressed in activities in all sectors and at all levels.

 

The meeting being held in Nadi, Fiji Islands 23–25 August will consider current AHD strategies and goals, AHD achievements, constraints on achievement of planned outputs and outcomes, and effective ways of mainstreaming AHD actions.

We need bold new approach on women's health - Baravilala

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) reproductive health adviser Dr Wame Baravilala at the 11th Triennial Conference of Pacific Women at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community in Noumea (SPC Photograph, 18 August 2010). There needs to be a bold new approach to women’s health in the Pacific to tackle persistent problems of violence against women, poor maternal health and high rates of obesity and cancer, the Conference of Pacific Women in Noumea heard. Some progress has been made in drawing leaders’ attention to the need for action to eliminate violence against women, but United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) reproductive health adviser Dr Wame Baravilala, pictured, said three national studies showing continuing high levels of such violence, including sexual violence.
