Dr Viliami PULOKAPhysical Activity Adviser

We often forget to consider the importance of Good Health when we are Healthy but forced to spend a lot of money and resources to regain it once diseased. Much have been said about the burden of Non Communicable Diseases (NCD) better referred to as Lifestyle Diseases in the Pacific Island Communities and their correlation with Physical Activity, Diet and social habits such as Smoking and Alcohol Drinking. We need to continue talking but also ‘walk the talk’. NCD Talks sell best when we role model it – Doctors for patients, Program Managers for In-country Program Implementers and Parents for children.

SPC is doing just that by creating a new position for a Physical Activity Advisor and reorientating its services forming the new noncommunicable disease Team (NCD).

Dr Viliami Puloka of Tonga worked both as a Clinician and a Public Health Medical Officer with the Tonga Government Ministry of Health for more than fifteen years.

In his most recent post as Head of Health Promotion and noncommunicable disease in Tonga, he was involved with the development of the Tonga National Strategy to prevent and control NCD. Furthermore, he took part in ProLead – Professional Leadership in Health Promotion - which is a WHO initiative training on Health Promotion Leadership focusing on development of sustainable funding mechanism such as Health Promotion Foundation. Moreover, Viliami is currently participating in the OPIC Study – Obesity Control in the Pacific Islands – a 4-country intervention study in the Pacific focusing in Youth which includes Australia, New Zealand, Tonga and Fiji.
