SPC library system is a private library that exists to provide information services to SPCís professional and technical staff, its projects and programmes; and to promote information availability in the region. There are libraries at SPC Noumea, New Caledonia and at SPC Suva, Fiji Islands.

Mission statement

To achieve excellence in the collection, storage, preservation, and retrieval of information to meet the research, learning, and instructional needs of the SPC staff.

Mandate

SPCís governing bodies, the Conference of the Pacific Community and the Committee of Representatives of Governments and Administrations (CRGA), provide the mandate for the programme and set its key directions.

Branches

SPC Noumea Library dates back to the creation of SPC itself, and one of the strengths of the collection is its continuity over the lifespan of the organisation. The historic collection contains photographs, films, speeches, ephermera, first-edition texts and holds an example of most of the publications of SPC. The current collection of over 40,000 items has regional and international publications in French, English and some Pacific languages. The subject areas of the collection reflect the work of the organisation and include HIV/AIDS, public health, tobacco and alcohol issues, epidemiology, nutrition and lifestyle diseases, fisheries, aquaculture, marine and oceanic sciences, demography, statistics, culture, gender, women, and youth issues.

The Suva branch library has six separate collections that have been developed over recent years to serve the Regional Office programmes of Forestry, the Maritime Proggramme, the Community Education Training Centre, the Regional Media Centre, Agriculture and Adolescent Reproductive Health.
