Data Management Services to WCPFC |

The OFP Data Management Section undertakes the role of data managers for WCPFC on a contractual basis, which includes the provision of data management support to the small island developing (SID) country-members of the WCPFC. In this key result area, the data management activities include :

Compilation, quality control and management of the WCPFC databases, which comprise various types of scientific data provided by members according to WCPFC reporting obligations.
The data includes:
- Annual catch estimates
- Aggregated catch and effort data
- Operational (logsheet) data
- Aggregate Size composition data
- Regional Observer programme data

WCPFC Scientific Committee presentations |
|
Preparation and presentation of papers describing the WCFPC data holdings for the annual WCPFC Scientific Committee meeting (SC), including:
- Scientific Data Provided to the Commission
- Annual catch estimates for the WCPFC Convention Area
- Overview of the WCPFC Tuna Fisheries, including economic conditions
- Recent changes in the scientific data provided for stock assessments

Management of the Scientific data section of the WCPFC web site, including the preparation of various information covering the following specific areas:

Technical support for the WPEA-OFM project covering Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam, including

WCPFC Scientific Data submission |

Management of the WCFPC scientific data submission process
This includes:
- Calls for the annual provision of scientific data
- Receipt and acknowledgement of scientific data submissions
- Quality control checking of data provided
- Importing data into the WCFPC databases
- Transmission of WCPFC databases to the WCPFC Secretariat on a quarterly basis

WCPFC Tuna Fishery Yearbook |

Production of the WCPFC Tuna Fishery Yearbook tables, maps and graphs.
This publication presents annual catch estimates in the WCPFC Statistical Area from 1950 to 2011.
The tables of catch statistics cover the main commercial tuna and billfish species caught in the region:
albacore (Thunnus alalunga), bigeye (Thunnus obesus), skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis), yellowfin (Thunnus albacares), black marlin (Makaira indica), blue marlin (Makaira nigricans), striped marlin (Tetrapturus audax), swordfish (Xiphias gladius),blue shark (Prionace glauca), silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis), oceanic whitetip shark (Carcharhinus longimanus), mako sharks (Isurus spp.)

Technical services provided to the WCPFC Secretariat, including
- Preparation of data summaries to be included in WCPFC meeting papers evaluating Commission Management Measures (CMMs)
- Preparation of catch data summaries to determine WCPFC member budget contributions
- Advice on ROP data management issues
- Provision of ad hoc advice/data summaries from WCPFC tuna fishery databases
- Provision of tuna fishery database systems to the WCPFC Secretariat, including:

Bycatch Mitigation Information System (BMIS) |
|
The BMIS is a resource for fisheries managers, scientists, fishers and the general public. It is the result of a Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) project to centralise and make readily available, information on the mitigation and management of bycatch in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO). The database is a reference and educational tool that supports the Commission's responsibilities with regard to the sustainable management of non-target, or bycatch, species in WCPO fisheries targeting highly migratory species, including tuna and billfish.
