Public Domain Catch & Effort data aggregated by 5x5

At the Eleventh Meeting of the Standing Committee on Tuna and Billfish (SCTB), 28 May - 6 June 1998, Honolulu, SCTB established that catch and effort data grouped by time period and geographic area, for all fishing nations combined, are considered to be in the public domain. To download public domain catch and effort data for driftnet, longline, pole-and-line and purse seine, click on the links below. Each self-extracting zip EXE file contains two files: (1) a Microsoft Visual FoxPro 2.0 DBF file containing the data; (2) a text file containing the field names and formats for the DBF file, and notes on the sources, coverage and quality of the data.

The catch and effort data have been raised to represent the total catch and effort. The accuracy of the data is variable; therefore, the notes on the sources of the data should be examined carefully. In particular, purse-seine catches of bigeye and yellowfin have not been adjusted for the misidentification of bigeye as yellowfin on logsheets.

  • Driftnet data, grouped by 5x5 and month, cover 1983 to 1990 and the Pacific Ocean south of the equator. This fishery has been inactive since 1991.

  • Longline data, grouped by 5x5 and month, cover 1950 to 2004 and the whole Pacific Ocean.

  • Pole-and-line data, grouped by 5x5 and month, cover 1970 to 2004 and the western and central Pacific Ocean (west of 150W).

  • Purse-seine data, grouped by 5x5 and month, cover 1967 to 2005 and the western and central Pacific Ocean (west of 150W).

These data files were last updated in October 2006.
