Tokelau has no means of export at
this stage. Exportation of dried copra and handicrafts ceased more than
few decades ago, mainly due to decline in price and transportation.
Samoa is Tokelau's main trading partner mainly with the
importation of various commodities, especially groceries, petroleum,
frozen goods, toiletries and other goods. Machineries, timbers, cements and
other commodities are ordered directly to New Zealand and sometimes
Australia or Fiji.
There are three Co-operative stores in Tokelau
-
one on each atoll. These stores plus private businesses forward their
orders to the main office in Apia which in turn tender these orders to
wholesalers in Samoa. As mentioned earlier, heavier commodities are transshipped
direct to Tokelau from New Zealand.
All records of goods going to Tokelau
from Samoa are kept in the
main office in Apia.
