The meeting of the Directors of Public Health was a milestone for the Pacific AHD in terms of working towards an effective, quality and accessible adolescents’ health and development program at the country level.
The Pacific AHD 2010 work plan has prioritized this regional meeting as crucial for the benefit of youth health in the country. Past evaluations of the program had highlighted the need to mainstream and obtain ownership from key political, policy makers and decision makers at the country and community level.
The agenda for the meeting has been planned for the presentations and discussions to cover the main key strategic areas of the regional AHD 2009-2012 Strategic plans with specific observations of the work of the regional and country plans 2009-10.
The evidences for the meeting were basically from the AHD 2009 and 1-2nd AHD quarterly report for 2010. Prior to the meeting, four sets of questions around the key strategic areas of the program were sent to the director, of which there were very impressive feedbacks, that forms the substance of the discussions.
As result, the meeting has been very informative, highly technical and professional, with a clear set of recommendations in the form of a draft communiqué, which forms basis for the Directors’ passion and commitment to assist in managing and leading the national AHD teams.
The levels of discussions on the key issues affecting our young people were very broad and also contextual to the pacific way of living at the communities. The proposed actions were also feasible and practical. Again it boils down to commitment and leadership both at the regional and national level. Team spirit developed during the meeting shows great potential to move forward by ensuing the better health outcome and development to meet the goals of the MDG and the Health Ministers’ call, Madang 2009.
