Tilapia

Mossambicus tilapia was introduced into Tuvalu and has occupied the inland tidal pools that are prominent throughout the main island of Funafuti.

A unique form of Integrated agriculture - aqauaculture occurs in the atoll. It has been a common practice to locate the household piggeries nearby the pools and the pig effluent is a source of fertilisation for the ponds which support the tilapia. The fish are harvested, cooked and made into pig food.
