Research & Development
  • Sea cucumber :

Sea cucumber research has been conducted by the WorldFish Center at its aquaculture station at St Vincent. The sea cucumber project was targeting sandfish (Holothuria scabra). The project aims were to improve hatchery techniques for mass production. Juvenile sea cucumbers produced were released into their natural habitat to test the viability of restocking and stock enhancement programs. These experiments resulted in information that helped determine the best trade-off between production and survival.

The project also examined the feasibility of polyculture of sea cucumber with commercial prawn farms in New Caledonia as well as the monoculture of sandfish in prawn ponds.
