Over the past 30 years, aquaculture of blue prawn (Litopenaus stylirostris), has been successfully developed in New Caledonia. In 2005, a total of 2400 tonnes was produced generating XFP 2 billion (USD 20 million). The current level of production consolidates aquaculture as New Caledonia's second highest export revenue earner, after nickel.
It is envisioned that the industry expansion could cover a further 1,000 ha (especially in the Northern Province) which would increase production to 5,000 tonnes per annum.
Current research and development is carried out in conjunction with IFREMER. Areas of support include genetic improvement, immunology, pathology.
