  • Barramundi (Lates calcarifer)

In Papua New Guinea both of the major river systems, the Sepik River on the east coast and the Fly River on the west, support inland fisheries with potential for aquaculture development. The barramundi fishery in the Fly River and Lake Murray is a major commercial fishery that went through a boom-bust experience. Record landings in 1999 were about 170 tonnes valued at approximately USD200 thousand dollars.

A successful barramundi farm has been established in Papua Barramundi4_bNew Guinea in Madang. The farm is aiming to produce 250 tonnes of fish per annum.
