On 11 April 2018, the Pacific Geospatial and Surveying Council (PGSC) elected a new Chair and Vice Chair to lead the Council in implementing its newly-launched 10-year Strategy.
One of the goals of the PGSC Strategy highlights the Council’s commitment to promote learning innovation, gender equity, and home-grown expertise. Few better exemplify these traits than the new PGSC Vice Chair, Ms Meizyanne Hicks of Fiji.
Meet the new Vice Chair for the PGSC, Meizyanne Hicks from Fiji Lands Department. She has been working in the geospatial field for more than 15 years. Meizyanne obtained a Diploma in GIS and Bachelor’s Degree in Geography and Land Use Planning from the University of the South Pacific.
“I am ready for this new challenge, to set a target and not be discouraged but to go for it and be determined.”
What inspired you to take up this field?
I have always had an interest in maps from schools days. Later on I discovered how Geospatial Information Management and Surveying lays the foundation for better planning, decision making and sustainable land development, which became a driver for my interest in this field.
Did you face any challenges in terms of gender equity and how did you overcome this?
Yes. However, I had to be determined and not lose courage, knowing that my work in this field is contributing to the overall development of my country.
How does it feel to be the newly elected Vice Chair for the PGSC?
I am honoured to be selected for this important position and at the same time humbled by the trust that my fellow regional colleagues have placed on me for this tremendous responsibility to progress the PGSC and implement the now launched strategy.
From your perspective, what does the strategy now mean for the Pacific?
The PGSC strategy is a step in the right direction for the development of our Pacific Island States, where we can pull resources together to address our needs in the Geospatial and Surveying Field.
Your advice to young people wanting to pursue a career in this field?
The Geospatial and Surveying field is an exciting and rewarding career choice where you can positively contribute to your country.
