The Taro Genetic Resources Conservation and Utilization project is being executed by SPC with ACIL as the contractor and active participation of PNG Solomon Islands and Samoa. It is a 3 year project in collaboration with AusAid, ACIAR, and IPGRI that started in June 1998 for the collection and conservation of taro in the Pacific Island countries, and the use of the genetic resources in plant improvement programmes. Collecting activities have been undertaken in PNG, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji and breeding and selection programmes are progressing in PNG and Samoa. 

THe TaroGen project was evaluated and as a result it will be extended for 2 years under SPC  starting January 2002.

TIssue Culture and Cryopreservation research is underway at SPC RGC.

Taro leaf blight resistance material are being provided to the region.
