| The EU-SPC PRAP Seed and
Planting Materials project works with the public and private sector for
improved seed supplies for farmers. SPC represents the region on the
executive committee of the Asia Pacific Seed Association APSA). Through
APSA access to seed supplies of appropriate varieties from Asia is being
explored. In 1998-99, Quarantine Guidelines for the Importation of
Vegetable Seed and a Draft Regional seed Policy were prepared by project
consultants. A Sub-regional Seed Workshop was conducted in August 1999 to
present technical topics and discuss the formation of national seed groups
to improve the seed supplies to farmers through better cooperation between
the public and private sector. A consultant visited Fiji and Tonga after
the meeting to facilitate the formation of national seed groups for this
purpose.
