Design improvements to
fish aggregation device (FAD) mooring systems in general use in Pacific
Islands countries
by R.L. Boy and B. SmithThis
1984 manual present the result of a study initiated to meet the need for
marine engineering expertise to improve fish aggregation device (FAD)
technology. It drew heavily on the combined experience and practical
understanding of fisheries officers in the field, published and
unpublished documentation on individual country FAD development
programmes, and the ocean engineering expertise of the NOAA National
Data Buoy Center.
FADs in use at that time are critically reviewed with a
view to identifying problems in design or fabrication, which contribute
to premature failure of the mooring. The results of this analysis
provided the basis for the development of a recommended FAD mooring line
design which aimed at eliminating or accommodating many of the problems
associated with failure of designs.
