About the Coastal Fisheries Programme (CFP)

The SPC Coastal Fisheries programme is one of the three constituent programmes of the SPC Marine Resources Division. The CFP is a bilingual French/English programme, strongly oriented towards the publication of practical resource materials, on-the-job attachment training within member countries, direct advice, and applied research within our area of expertise. In short, we provide our member countries and territories with practical assistance in facing up to real-world problems.

Beche-de-mer Information Bulletin #30

If you have ever questioned the need for species' scientific names, don't miss the excellent article by Yves Samyn et al.: "Using sea cucumbers to illustrate the basics of zoological nomenclature". Citing Shakespeare and using many detailed examples, the authors explain how a scientific name is first attributed to a species, and then sometimes corrected, changed, revised or even "stabilised".

How to Make Fish Silage

Every year, hundreds of tonnes of fish waste are thrown away in Pacific Islands. This waste is often disposed of in rubbish dumps, where it attracts flies, rats and other pests that can carry diseases and contaminate water. This new comic book explains simple techniques that can be used to process fish waste into liquid fish silage, an environmentally friendly fertiliser.

Traditional Marine Resource Management and Knowledge Information Bulletin #26 (Dec. 2009)

In this issue we have two articles. In the first, Rintaro Ono and David J. Addison examine the fishing lore of Tokelau, focusing on fishing practices, technologies and materials, and their relationship to fish ecology. Longline terminal gear identification guide

This guide will help observers, researchers, and captains of longline boats to correctly identify hooks, swivels, trace lines, and baits used in pelagic longline fishing. It is important that longline terminal gear is correctly identified as it has an effect, not only on target species catch rates, but on catch rates and post-release survival of bycatch species including marine turtles.
