About SPC Fisheries Programmes

SPC has been involved in the Pacific Islands fisheries sector since the first South Pacific Commission technical meeting on fisheries in 1952 defined specific areas requiring regional attention. Since then, through its various programmes and projects, SPC’s aim in the fisheries domain has been to:

• Assist governments and administrations to develop scientifically informed and socially achievable coastal ecosystem management systems, including coastal living resource components of national ocean policies;
• Provide a regional support framework for economically, socially and environmentally sustainable aquaculture planning, research and development by Pacific Island governments and private enterprises;
• Assist governments and administrations to develop and manage domestic nearshore commercial fisheries within a sustainable ecosystem context;
• Ensure that regional and national fisheries management authorities have access to high-quality scientific information and advice on the status of and fishery impacts on stocks targeted or otherwise impacted by regional oceanic fisheries;
• Ensure that regional and national fisheries management authorities have access to accurate and comprehensive scientific data on fisheries targeting the region’s resources of tuna, billfish and other oceanic species;
• Improve understanding of pelagic ecosystems in the western and central Pacific Ocean, with a focus on the western tropical Pacific.

About this digital library

This digital library comprises 7603 fisheries and aquaculture-related documents, in French and in English, produced by, for, or in collaboration with SPC that are currently available in digital format. It includes newsletters, information bulletins, meeting papers, technical reports, field reports, posters, technical manuals and handbooks, and bibliographies. SPC has produced many more fisheries-related documents that are currently only available as printed copies. SPC's Library, Fisheries Information Section and the Reef Fisheries Observatory keep working on processing these documents into a digital format, starting with the most recent ones.

The Digital Library is also available on DVD, which is searchable by title, authors, year, and full text. Documents are available in PDF format. The DVD is updated every year with new references.
