Forest-based resources are integral to Pacific livelihoods – Solomon Islands is no exception. Forests cover over 80% of the country’s land area and are central to the social, environmental and economic well-being of the nation.
Forest-based industries are a major source of employment in Solomon Islands. Exports of round logs contribute over 70–85% of export earnings (valued at around 70 million Euros) and 18% of total government revenue.
However, the current level of harvesting of round logs from natural forests is not sustainable, neither environmentally nor economically. Without intervention, the industry faces severe and inevitable shortages in the near future.
In light of that, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) through its EU-funded Facilitating Agricultural Commodity Trade (FACT) project is assisting the Solomon Islands forestry industry, initially by engaging Salwood Asia Pacific Pty Ltd to conduct a study on the development of a market information system for Solomon Island timbers.

Helping the underprivileged and empowering rural women are the main focuses of Fiji’s Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises N Development (FRIEND).
FRIEND started out in Western Fiji and has slowly spread throughout the country. As part of its activities, it has identified 25 influential individuals from all over the country to become ‘change agents’ to reach the wider section of communities in Fiji.
The role of a change agent is to look at the way things are currently done, identify opportunities for improvements, and help bring about change.
The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) through its EU-funded FACT project (Facilitating Agriculture Commodity Trade) has selected FRIEND as one of 14 Pacific Island enterprises that will receive special support to develop their potential. SPC jointly sponsored the change agent training, which was held in Lautoka from 21 to 23 April.

Delivered by Cenon Padolina under Item 4: Regional Inputs, 21 April 2009
Pacific Island countries and territories have been making every effort to manage their forests sustainably, but in spite of those efforts the region is now facing a major threat from the impacts of climate change and other unsustainable forest practices taking place on a global scale.
We are glad to note that the recently negotiated NLBI is placing new emphasis on regional involvement, providing us with an opportunity to influence the shaping of the Forum’s work programme to take account of regional needs and aspirations.
In relation to funding and other means of implementation, we support the proposals of the Secretary-General to establish a dedicated global sustainable forest management (SFM) fund and a facilitative mechanism.

The Regional Organic Task Force is meeting in Nadi, Fiji, from 27 April to 1 May 2009. Task force members come mainly come from Pacific Island NGOs (non-governmental organisations) working to promote the benefits of organic agriculture for Pacific producers and consumers.
Pacific organic agriculture gained momentum in 2008 with the official launch of the Pacific Organic Standard. The standard was developed under a project financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and implemented by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) in cooperation with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and the Regional Organic Task Force. The Task Force has also recently developed a Pacific Organic Strategy Plan that focuses on building national capacity in organic agriculture.
