Pacific Population Projections 2000-2025

This wall poster (both in English and French versions) was published and distributed to all Regional Pacific member countries.

Please note that these projections are not predictions of future population size, but illustrations of how differences in fertility, mortality and migration could affect population increase.

Population and Development Planning in the Pacific

The main part of this report is a statement prepared by participants at the Regional Seminar on Population and Development held in Noumea, New Caledonia, 26-30 March 2001.

The objective of this seminar was to bring together Pacific planners to discuss population and development planning. Most participants were senior planners, and they determined the main agenda themselves. Thus, while this report covers a number of familiar topics relating to population and development in the Pacific region, it is a statement of the views of Pacific planners, not the usual 'experts', and it contains insights that are rarely found in reports prepared by consultants, donors or multi-lateral agencies. It is essential reading for anyone who is concerned with population and development in the Pacific and who wishes to understand the issues, the processes at work and the constraints.

This report is available in both English and French.

New Caledonia Population profile, based on 1996 Census

The 16th report of our country profile series provides a brief demographic profile for New Caledonia, based on information derived from the last New Caledonian census, and data from the New Caledonian vital registration system. Unlike more traditional demographic analyses, this profile is written for a non-technical audience.

The aim of this profile is to provide an overview of some of the demographic features of the population of New Caledonia. The emphasis is on identifying some of the key features of observed socio-economic and demographic levels and trends, and it is hoped that this profile promotes interest in further research.

This report is available in both English and French.
