A USD two million agreement to fund the new phase of the regional project, Pacific Islands Greenhouse Gas Abatement through Renewable Energy in the Pacific (PIGGAREP), was signed on 6 May during the SIDS DOCK Pacific Regional Meeting in Nadi. The signing is the result of a collaborative effort of SPC – the lead agency on energy in the Pacific – and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), the host of PIGGAREP, a Global Environment Facility and United Nations Development Programme regional project. SPC is the regional representative to the SIDS DOCK Programme Coordination Group and has been working tirelessly to bring about the funding for PIGGAREP Plus that was signed this week.

When Forum Leaders endorsed the Framework for Action on Energy Security in the Pacific (FAESP) in 2010, they also endorsed the region’s two key approaches to improving energy security. The first is the whole-of-sector approach where answers to the challenges of the region’s energy sector are drawn from a wide range of available options, rather than a pre-determined technology or application. The second is the ‘many partners, one team’ approach, where all the CROP (Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific) agencies see their individual efforts, investments and resources, including funds, as part of the total resources invested in the implementation of FAESP. They work together harmoniously to secure resources for the region, rather than centralising resources in one agency.
