Ministers responsible for energy, information and communication technology (ICT) and transport in Pacific Island countries and territories gathered today in an inaugural joint meeting organised by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) in Noumea, New Caledonia.
In his opening address, SPC Director-General Dr Jimmie Rodgers said, ‘the past three and a half years, arguably more than any other period in the recent history of this region, has been [a time] of unprecedented challenges at global, regional and national levels. These challenges have demanded the attention of leaders at all levels and have required careful and strategic responses’.

Partnerships and synergies that will bring out the best in agencies dealing with food security issues was the focus of a workshop which was carried out at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) in Suva, Fiji.
In his statement to the participants, SPC Director-General Dr Jimmie Rodgers said that this approach would allow stakeholders to deliver the optimum results to address food security issues for Pacific Island countries and territories.
The participants at the two-day workshop were members of a multi agency Food Secure Pacific Working Group that will develop a joint implementation workplan based on the Food Security Regional Framework that was endorsed by Pacific Island Forum leaders at their meeting in August, 2010 in Port Vila, Vanuatu.

Under two new agreements French Polynesia will receive technical expertise and funding from the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) to mitigate the risks of natural disasters facing the country.
In a ceremony bringing together the Government of French Polynesia, the French High Commission, the European Union and SPC, President Gaston Tong Sang praised ‘the perfect symbiosis’ between all parties. He remarked that ‘when we all pull in the same direction, we can achieve high results to the benefit of our people, particularly the most vulnerable.’
In welcoming this partnership, SPC Deputy Director-General Richard Mann noted the ‘importance of these agreements for the safety of populations exposed to natural disaster risk’ and their focus on ‘addressing priorities set by French Polynesia.’ French High Commissioner Richard Didier emphasised the ‘concrete, tangible and on-the-ground’ results to be achieved by the partnership.

As part of heightened efforts to mainstream gender and human rights across the organisation, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) launched its White Ribbon Advocates Programme today to coincide with International Womens Day.
The initiative, which was announced internally in December 2010, involves both male and female staff volunteers from all programmes and levels of the organisation including the Director-General advocating for gender equality and ending violence against women by speaking out and demonstrating in practice that this is both their personal business and the business of SPC.
