Code of Conduct

The CETC CODE OF CONDUCT applies to all students/participants and staff at CETC.
As a CETC student/staff, you have to comply with this Code of Conduct.

• Respect yourself and others, as harassment, bullying, physical or verbal assault, will not be tolerated.
• Behave appropriately—ensuring that your actions and words make learning and teaching enjoyable for all.Dress appropriately for as community leaders, you need to earn respect and set examples and to observe protocols of culture and communities you work for or visit. Likewise, as a representative of your country and the SPC, and as a member of  Narere community, proper and acceptable behavior is required at all times.
• • Be punctual, as absences, lateness and early departures from class will be recorded. If absenteeism becomes a problem students may be asked to speak to their instructor. If classes are missed, it’s your responsibility to get hold of and complete the work.
• You will not be allowed to attend class if they are affected by alcohol, betel nut or non-prescription drugs.
• SPC has a smoke-free policy and CETC is a smoke-free environment. Smoking is not permitted inside any CETC buildings or offices.  There are designated smoking places where you have to go to smoke.
• The use of alcohol and any other drugs including beetle nut is not allowed inside the hostels and classrooms at any time.  Alcoholic drinks however, may be allowed during special functions of the Centre like graduation.
• Drugs and substances dealt with here include: alcohol, spirits, beetle nuts, marijuana and related, home brew, cigarettes and others. Whilst it is  recognised that substances like kava (yagona) and beetle nuts are cultural practices and culturally respected by countries concerned, the Centre will uphold its decision with qualification and ask trainees and visitors to refrain from taking these (eating, drinking this) on campus or bringing these in.
• Mobile phones must be switched off in class.
• It’s important to comply with Occupational Health and Safety requirements, for example by wearing appropriate uniforms and protective clothing or shoes.
• Respect the CETC property and don’t damage or remove any property or equipment from CETC grounds. Offenders will be required to pay for replacement costs. You are required to respect property and equipment.
• Breaching these rules may result in the termination of your scholarship award.  Disciplinary measures will depend on the nature of the offence.

Guests and Visitors

CETC does not allow guests and visitors to stay in students’ rooms overnight or longer. Guests can be entertained in the island kitchen or the common rooms.  All visitors should leave the compound by 8pm.  Male visitors are not allowed into flats.

Radio, Video/DVD/Television

Each accommodation has a television set and a DVD player.  These are to be used up to 11pm on weekdays and to 12 midnight in the weekend and always in consideration of the study and sleeping needs of others.

Preparedness

Occasionally, there are power-blackouts. There is a standby generator in readiness for a blackout.  However, every flat is provided with a hurricane lantern, a radio and a torch.

Evacuation procedures

Procedures for earthquakes, fires and other disasters are provided and CETC will have routine practical drills on this (see the annex)

Energy Efficiency

CETC observes efficient use of energy to reduce costs and carbon dioxide emissions.  The following must be observed:

• Turn off iron after use
• Turn off lights, fans, radios and switches when leave your rooms or flats.
• Turn off the electric hot water switch after showers and use this facility only during cold months if this is needed.
• Fill electric water jug to the requirement and boil only what is needed.
• Use the drum ovens outside the dining hall whenever possible.
• Observe rules on plastics and bottles and put all of these in the right containers.

Complaints or Opinions

Students can air their grievances during their monthly advisory meetings, or directly to the Head or use the opinion box outside the office. The box is cleared by the Head at the end of every day.

Security

The CETC compound is well-lit up at night, fenced all around. A security officer is on duty 24 hours a day and throughout the weekends and public holidays.  The gate is locked from 6pm in the evenings.  A staff member who acts as the warden stays on campus and can be contacted for emergency needs.  To ensure that your possessions and flats are safe, please note the following:
Do not put light mosquitoes coil anywhere near curtains, books, where they might catch fire.
Lock your cupboards
Report immediately (even at night) to the warden any major damage or suspicious persons around the premises.  There is a log book to report every damage or fault you come across.
