DevFish2

brochure_photoThe DevFish2 project overall objective is to increase the contribution from the sustainable use of highly migratory marine resources, particularly tuna, to the alleviation of poverty in Pacific states. It promotes the establishment of a more favourable policy environment for tuna industry development in Pacific countries, including the small scale component. It will provide direct assistance to small and medium enterprises in the sector as well as artisanal fishers and also build a region-wide IUU deterrence strategy, utilising the results of initial monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) studies in building robust and cost-effective regional capabilities to combat IUU fishing. Training for local fishermen to supply fish to Kiribati’s new fish factory

pict1The EU-funded, SPC-implemented, DevFish2 project funded a training workshop on small fishing operations (SFO) from 11 to 20 September 2012 in Kiribati. The training was facilitated by William Sokimi of SPC and Samol Kanawi from the PNG National Fisheries College. They used the SFO curriculum taught at PNG’s Fisheries College. The two-week intensive training focused specifically on mid-water fishing techniques, fishing gear construction, onboard fish handling, preservation skills, basic sea safety, and basic awareness about fishing as a business.

Acting Director of Fisheries, Raikon Tumoa, said, ‘This is very important training.  It will have a tremendous positive impact on the way our fishermen catch and process fish — more efficient and effective — which will lead to good quality products that meet Competent Authority requirements for export.’

DevFish facilitates participation of fishers associations in FAO policy discussion

mike_ray_nicoleThe FAO/SPC Pacific Islands Regional Consultation on the Development of Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF) workshop was held 12–14 June at SPC headquarters in Noumea. The DevFish project facilitated contact with the small-scale fishers associations in several Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs) so that they could be invited by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and SPC to attend the workshop.

The purpose of the consultation was to gather views and inputs from PICTs for the development of the International Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries. These guidelines will complement the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries.
