04 FEBRUARY 2009 SUVA (Pacnews) ---- There will not be any second round of talks by Pacific Leaders on the proposed February 10 meeting in Fiji, it has been confirmed, reports Fiji Sun
Papua New Guinea (PNG) Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare and Fiji’s interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama had agreed to a February 10 meeting to accommodate Cdre Bainimarama’s request. This was after the Pacific Island Leaders Forum chair and Niue premier Toke Talagi over-ruled a decision by Sir Michael to defer the recent meeting to a later date. The Pacific Forum Secretariat in Suva said there was no such meeting as it was not part of the Port Moresby outcome. PIFS media officer Johnson Honimae said there was a suggestion by Fiji and PNG to have this meeting so that Cdre Bainimarama could attend but this will not eventuate. Mr Honimae said the Pacific leaders agreed that there was no need for that meeting as the Ministerial Contact Group would continue to monitor Fiji’s situation. Mr Talagi had said the Forum had not excluded Commodore Bainimarama in the dialogue process but instead gave him every opportunity to be part of the process…..PNS (ENDS) |
