> Women in Fisheries Information Bulletin

Issue #17 - December 2007

Welcome to this issue of the Women in Fisheries Bulletin, which highlights gender roles in coastal fisheries, women’s fishing activities in urban and rural communities, and gender issues in development.

We start with two articles on gender issues. Mecki Kronen and Aliti Vunisea report on gender roles in coastal fisheries across 17 Pacific Island countries and territories.

Changing patterns in women’s fishing participation included the use of motorised boat transport, fishing at night, fishing for income and diving for invertebrates or finfish. Women were also generally responsible for processing and transporting finfish and invertebrate produce to the local market, to buyers and to agents or middlemen. Women’s participation in marketing should be accounted for and considered in fisheries management. Aliti Vunisea discusses institutional influence on gender roles in the Pacific. Traditional, cultural, religious and market institutions have tremendous influences on men’s and women’s division of labour in Pacific Island societies.

> Toolkit: Gender and Indicators: A 'Cutting Edge Pack' from BRIDGE

" What does a world without gender inequality look like? Realising this vision requires inspiring and mobilising social change. But what would indicate we are on the right track - and how will we know when we get there? Gender-sensitive indicators and other measurements of change are critical - for building the case for taking gender (in)equality seriously, for enabling better planning and actions, and for holding institutions accountable for their commitments on gender."

These Cutting Edge Packs provide accessible overviews of the latest thinking on gender themes and summaries of the most useful resources. Other Packs are available at http://www.bridge.ids.ac.uk/reports_gend_cep.html

> Programming to address Violence Against Women, 10 case studies
This review documents UNFPA’s experience in the field in supporting projects that address many forms of violence against women, with the aim of disseminating lessons that can be used to confront the problem on a wider scale. It is intended primarily for development practitioners and others seeking to change attitudes and practices that have been passed on through generations.

Breaking the cycle of violence is a necessary—and urgent—task, if the realization of women’s human rights is to become a reality in this generation.

> Friend or foe of women? Economic Partnership Agreements unmasked by Liepollo Lebohang Pheko
The Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) imply improved job security, livelihoods, well-being and human rights, but for whom?

The author contends that gender impacts of liberalisation of EPAs are seldom considered. This review examines the cost of liberalisation on women in terms of physical resources, human resources, social capital and skills. It outlines several aspects of EPAs that advance the marginalisation of women.

> Violence against the girl child in the Pacific Islands Region
"The Pacific Island girl child is all too often raised to think of herself as a second class citizen and is subject to discriminatory social practices. Furthermore, in most countries of the Pacific region there is pervasive violence and a culture of secrecy which, combined with the effects of various cultural and socio-economic factors, including rapid social change, has led to increasing rates of violence against children, including sexual violence."
