Dr Dennie Iniakwala

ImageDr Dennie Iniakwala comes from the Solomon Islands. He first joined SPC in October 2003 and is currently the Head of the HIV & STI Section within the Public Health Division based in Suva, Fiji. Before joining SPC he worked as the Undersecretary for Health Improvement within the Ministry of Health and Medical Services of the Solomon Islands. He obtained his medical qualification from the University of Papua New Guinea and later completed post-graduate studies in Tropical Child Health at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK , and the School of Health Services Management, UNSW, Australia.

STI Treatment Adviser

Sophaganine Ali

ImageNin joined SPC in December 2007. Prior to her current role as STI Adviser with SPC she worked as the Senior Medical Officer responsible for a Hub Center in Fiji. Nin obtained her medical qualification from the Medical School in Cambodia, and later completed her post-graduate Diploma in Dermato-Venerology at the International Institute of Dermatology, Bangkok, Thailand. She also has a Master of Science for disease control from the Prince Leopold for Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, Belgium.

Epidemiologist (HIV/STI Surveillance specialist)

Ian Wanyeki

Image Ian has lived and worked in over 30 countries across the Pacific, Africa, South America, North America and the Canadian Arctic. He speaks several languages and enjoys sports and traveling. Technical expertise includes strengthening disease surveillance systems, setting up electronic surveillance systems for mass gathering events and routine surveillance and enhancing the quality and trending of data for informed decision making. Before coming to SPC he worked with Futures Group as their senior technical evaluation manager for the PEPFAR funded AIDS Relief Program and was in charge of a multidisciplinary team that oversaw data use for decision making across ten countries in Africa and the Caribbean, where they managed patient data for over a quarter of a million patients on antiretrovirals.

Laboratory Specialist HIV & STI

Tebuka Toatu

ImageTebuka joined SPC in September 2011 as Laboratory Specialist for HIV & STI. He is from Kiribati and brings to SPC more than 20 years of working in the Medical Laboratory Service. He did a three year course in Medical laboratory Technology at Fiji School of Medicine from 1986 to 1988 and attained a Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science) from RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia in 2001. His main interest is in the field of HIV medicine and in 2007 he completed his Master of Science in Medicine (HIV/STD) at the University of Sydney. While in Kiribati he worked as Director of Laboratory Services and held the acting position of HIV/STI Coordinator for the HIV programme HIV CCM. He was involved in research work as part of his post-graduate studies with vulnerable groups in Kiribati (focusing on prevalence of HIV and selected STIs among young women boarding foreign fishing vessels in Kiribati). He also participated in the second generation surveillance studies in Kiribati in 2008, in a collaborative effort with SPC.

Coordinator North Pacific National Responses

Emi Chutaro 

ImageEmi is from from the RMI. She commenced with SPC in July 2006 as a HIV & STI BCC Officer and was recently appointed Coordinator for the North Pacific.  Previously, she worked for UNDP as a sustainable livelihoods development programme manager and RMI Millenium Development Goals focal point, grants director for the RMI Ministry of Education, and programme advisor for Youth to Youth in Health, Inc., a local Adolescent Reproductive Health capacity-building programme in the RMI for at-risk youth.  For the past several years, Emi has been involved in a number of health and education projects to promote community-level capacity and participation towards improving health and education outcomes in the RMI.

Project Development Officer

Mary Enciso

ImageOriginally from the USA, Mary joined the HIV & STI team in August 2009 as Project Development Officer based in FSM.  Prior to joining SPC, Mary worked for AusAID as the Development Assistance Officer for their northern Pacific program, where she managed the small grants scheme, and the technical assistance and scholarship programs for the region.  She has worked with the U.S. Peace Corps, first as a Peace Corps volunteer implementing reproductive and preventative health education programs at the grassroots level for Nicaragua's Ministry of Health; and then later at Peace Corps Headquarters providing administrative and programatic support for the agency's operations in the Caribbean region.

Michelle O'Conner

Michelle is a British citizen and hails from UK. She brings into SPC/PHD wealth of knowledge with Bachelor Degree in Public Health (Honors in Psychology), and Masters Degree in International Public Health and years of experience in working on International Public Health Programmes with UNICEF and more than 7 years working in both developed and developing countries in the areas of HIV & STI prevention and care. Prior to that, she worked for the Research Academic at the Centre for Values, Ethics and Law in Medicine, School of Public Health; University of Sydney, Australia

Finance Development Officer

Semenson Ehpel

 

ImageSemenson is from the island of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia.  He was appointed as the Finance Development Officer for the HIV & STI section for the northern Pacific office in September 2009.  For over four years he worked for the FSM Department of Health and Social Affairs as the Financial Management Specialist for the FSM HIV / STD / TB Programs.  Prior to that he worked for over three years at the Pohnpei State Department of Health Services as the administrative assistant.  Lastly he served five years in the United States Military as a Medical Administrative Specialist in the Army Medical Centers in Germany and the U.S.
