UN adopts declaration to fight non-communicable diseases

tonga.jpg.jpgNew York, 19 September—The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a political declaration that includes measures to prevent and control non-communicable diseases, which are blamed for 36 million of the world's 57 million deaths each year. The adoption of the document, which was drafted before the meeting, was made at the start of the two-day debate on ways to curb deaths from various forms of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases and mental illness. Pacific in an crisis, leaders declare

Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meeting Auckland have recognised the seriousness of the threat non-communicable diseases (NCDs) pose and have declared the ‘Pacific is in an NCD Crisis’. The leaders made the declaration in the Forum communiqué issued on 8 September. They expressed their deep concern that NCDs have reached epidemic proportions and has become a ‘human, social and economic crisis’ requiring an urgent and comprehensive response.

Australia commits $25m more

Australia will provide another AUD25 million over the next four years to help prevent and control chronic diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease across the Pacific. The announcement of this additional commitment was made by Australia's Prime Minister, Julia Gillard on 8 September while she was attending the 42nd Pacific Islands Forum in Auckland, New Zealand.
