PACINET
What is PACINET?
PACINET (the Pacific Islands Network for Taxonomy) is
designed to build taxonomic capacity in the Pacific Island Countries
for sustainable development. It is a joint program of the
Secretariat for the Pacific Community, the Secretariat of the
Pacific Regional Environment Programme and the University of the
South Pacific. Taxonomic capacity is having the human resources to
identify, describe, name and classify the unique biodiversity found
in all the Pacific Islands landscapes including rainforests,
grassland, freshwater systems, atolls, coral reefs and the deep
ocean.
PACINET’s activities are based on the needs of PICs,
and its annual work plan and business plan are overseen by a
steering committee made up of a Locally Organized and Operated
Partnership (LOOP). PACINET has a fulltime Coordinator who oversees
the day-to-day operations and implements the work plan.
PACINET works closely with the BioNET-International (www.bionet-intl.org)
- a global network to promote taxonomy in the biodiversity rich but
economically poorer countries of the world.
Overall, PACINET will focus on providing coordinated
access to existing taxonomic information and increasing taxonomic
capacity in the region. PACINET will endeavour to facilitate and
strengthen links between modern (scientific) taxonomy and local
(vernacular or traditional) taxonomy as a foundation for improving
the conservation, sustainable use and equitable sharing of the
benefits of biodiversity in the Pacific region.
PACINET welcomes contributions from individuals,
private sector, government and non-government organisations in this
quest to build regional taxonomic capacity to secure the future of
Pacific Islanders.
