The SPC-Plant Protection Service (PPS) has been in existence since 1950 and is mainly based in Suva, Fiji, with components in Papua New Guinea and the Federated States of Micronesia. PPS collaborates with countries and territories in the Pacific region to reduce the impact of pests, diseases and weeds in agriculture, forestry and the environment and focuses on Prevention, Preparedness and Pest management.
PPS works in partnership with Pacific countries and territories to maintain effective biosecurity (quarantine) systems that facilitate trade and tourism while limiting incursions of new pests, diseases and weeds.
PPS and Pacific island countries and territories collaboratively build capacities and develop nationally and regionally coordinated response systems to eradicate or contain outbreaks of new pests, diseases and weeds.
Countries are encouraged to manage agricultural and environmental pests sustainably by placing more reliance on biological control and traditional practices. PPS assists countries to develop pest management systems and supports national pest management with ongoing technical advice, information, extension and diagnostic services.
