Theme Fisheries and Aquaculture
Code F-ECL-1.2
Sub-theme Economics of Fisheries and Aquaculture: labour market activity.
Name Proportion of the labour force (> 15 years old) deriving their primary source of income from small-scale commercial fisheries and small-scale commercial aquaculture (as their full-time or principal form of economic activity) (%)
Definition Small-scale commercial fishers primarily fish for income (i.e. sale of catch, not subsistence). They typically involve fishing households (as opposed to commercial companies), using relatively small amounts of capital, low technology, relatively small fishing vessels, making short fishing trips, close to shore, mainly for local sale. Small-scale commercial aquaculture production is for the primary purpose of income generation. The production system can be fresh or salt water, producing both food and non-food products. They typically involve households (as opposed to commercial companies), using relatively small amounts of capital, low technologies and covering small acreage.
Calculation/Formula (Number of people (> 15y.o.) that derive their primary source of income from small-scale commercial fishing + number of people (> 15y.o.) that derive their primary income from small-scale aquaculture) / Total labour force (> 14 y.o.) x 100
Unit of Measure %
Range (eg Age) 15+ years
Purpose/Rationale To quantify the significance of fisheries for securing livelihoods. To measure participation in small-scale commercial fisheries.
