Name Unmet need for family planning (MDG 5.6)
Definition Women with unmet need are those who are fecund and sexually active but are not using any method of contraception, and report not wanting any more children or wanting to delay the next child.
Calculation/Formula "Women (married or in consensual union) who are pregnant or amenorrheic and whose pregnancies were unwanted or mistimed + fecund women who desire to either stop childbearing or postpone their next birth for at least two years, or who are undecided about whether or when to have another child, and who are not using a contraceptive method / Total number of women of reproductive age (15-49) who are married or in consensual union x 100"
Unit of Measure %
Range (eg Age) 15-49 years
Assumptions Data requirements: Desire for additional children of currently married women aged 15-49 years in the future (next two years); and current contraceptive use status of these women. (Note: usually calculated for married women or women in consensual union)
Purpose/Rationale The concept of unmet need points to the gap between women's reproductive intentions and their contraceptive behaviour. It indirectly shows the extent of accessibility and availability to family planning services.
