Sub-theme Vital Statistics
Name Adult mortality rate, (%)
Definition Probability that a 15 year old will die before reaching his/her 60th birthday , if they were to continue to experience mortality conditions prevailing at the time. Reported separately by sex
Calculation/Formula Calculated from life tables
Range (eg Age) 15+ years
Limitations Should be measured over 3 -5 year aggregate periods with 95% confidence intervals to minimise instability due to the small number of events. Indicator should be reported separately for Males and Females as causes of death (and therefore mortality patterns) often differ markedly by sex.
Purpose/Rationale Adult mortality is an important indicator of Burden of Disease (BOD) during the most economically productive age span.

Comments / Regional Trend Analysis As countries improve vital statistics and civil registration systems, there may be some increases in published measures of mortality (such as IMR) due to improvements in reporting rather than a true increase in mortality rate. Care must be taken in inter
