Drawing of a Thunnus albacaresYellowfin tuna are harvested in tropical waters by purse seine, longline, pole and line, and a variety of other Indonesian and Philippine gear types. The purse seine fishery, which catches a broad range of sizes, recorded their highest yellowfin catches ever (540,000 t) in 2008 –more than four times that of the longline fishery which takes mostly adult fish. Yellowfin tuna stocks in the western and central Pacific Ocean were last assessed in July 2009.

The assessment concluded that overall depletion has reduced stock biomass to about 60% of unexploited levels, with the western equatorial region fully exploited and the remaining regions under-exploited. While recent recruitment is considerably lower than the long-term average, biomass trends are principally driven by longline catch and effort indices. A substantial increase in juvenile fishing mortality due to Indonesian and Philippine surface fisheries highlights the need for improved estimates of catch from these fisheries. New features of the assessment included the use of alternative, and substantially higher, historical catch estimates for associated sets (e.g. on FADs), and improvements in longline catch rate indices and biological parameters (e.g. catchability, natural mortality and the spawner-recruit relationship).
