INSTALLATION AND OTHER ISSUES (Dec 31st 2002)

Installation

You can install all the programs from this document by clicking on the hyperlinks. In the dialogue box that will appear each time, choose the option "Run this program from its current location" and click on OK.

A number of files need to be installed in the order shown. If you do not have WINZIP installed on your computer YOU MUST install it first. It can be found at http://www.winzip.com

Files

  1. EPIINFO604d.ZIP (EpiInfo program if not already installed. This is the latest version January 2001
  2. DOEPI.ZIP The DOEPI tutorial program.
  3. LOGISTIC REGRESSION.ZIP this contains the logistic regression module for EPiINFO.
  4. CHOLERA EXERCISE.EXE contains the exercise on analytical epidemiology in DOEPI and HTML formats.
  5. Adobe acrobat if not already installed.
  6. Powerpoint viewer.

EPIINFO604d.ZIP (epiinfo604d.zip)

Open EPIINFO604d.ZIP.  Then  double click on INSTALL.EXE and the installation process will begin.

NOTE When prompted to make sure you enter C for the source drive (see below).

and that you also enter C for the DESTINATION drive. Then enter "I" to INSTALL the program (see below).

Follow the instructions on the screen when asked what files to select eg for printers and display select <F8> all of them.

NOTE If you are installing onto a computer running WINDOWS 2000 you may have to copy the file COMMAND.COM from the directory C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND into C:\WINDOWS if you receive an error message asking you where COMMAND.COM is.

Once you have installed EpiInfo you must install DOEPI.

DOEPI.ZIP (doepi.zip)

Open DOEPI.ZIP. Then go into the directory from windows explorer and double click on INSTALL.EXE. Follow the instructions

LOGISTIC REGRESSION.ZIP (logistic regression.zip)

Open the zipfile and extract all the files into C:\EPI6. The files will automatically be copied to the correct locations within this directory.

CHOLERA EXERCISE.EXE (cholera exercise.exe)

Double click on this item. The files will automatically be copied to the correct locations within the DOEPI directory. The desktop shortcuts are stored in the file SHORTCUTS.ZIP. When the ZIP file opens, select all the files and extract to the DESKTOP.

NOTE If using Windows 95/98/ME you will need to confirm that the properties are correctly set up for the EPI6 and DOEPI shortcuts. In particular, click on the 'Program' tab and make sure that the option 'Prevent MSDOS based programs from detecting Windows' has NOT got a tick in it (as in picture below). If this option is ticked you will find that Windows based materials will not run when selected from within the DOEPI exercise.

ADOBE ACROBAT  (http://www.adobe.com)

If you do not already have Adobe Acrobat reader v5.0 or above installed, you should install it now. Many of the materials in the exercise have been prepared in (.PDF) format and you will not be able to view them without Adobe Acrobat reader.

POWERPOINT VIEWER  (PPView97.exe)

If you do not already have powerpoint viewer installed (even if you have powerpoint installed), you should install it now. Many of the materials in the exercise have been prepared as presentations and you will not be able to view them without the viewer.

Double click on PPVIEW97.EXE in windows explorer and the program will automatically be installed.

KNOWN ISSUES

The tutorials and exercises should require no major “tweaking” in Windows 95/98/ME other than to decide whether to run EpiInfo or DOEPI in full screen or Windowed mode from the desktop. You can determine the mode by selecting the icon on the desktop and following the steps that follow:

In Windows 2000 you may have to experiment with these settings to get a reasonable result. Selecting full-screen mode works in the same way as in Windows 9X/ME, except that when you view the materials the DOEPI is always MINIMISED and you must manually resize the window when you return to it.

If you run DOEPI/EPIINFO in windowed mode in Windows 2000 you will lose the WINDOWS Mouse functionality.
