Main objectives: Teaching topics will include : • Plenary sessions for all participants covering theoretical knowledge in leptospirosis (morphology, physiology and growth, genetics and variability, antigenic structures, taxonomy, epidemiology, pathogenesis, immunity, clinical aspects in humans and animals, laboratory testing, measures for control and prevention). • Practical course aiming to acquire knowledge and practice in the laboratory diagnosis of leptospirosis (serology, culture, molecular biology including real-time PCR). • Workshops focusing on scientific publications.
Project objectives for the Asia-Oceania area: • Describe the mode of circulation of human leptospirosis in various states and territories. • Assess the incidence of leptospirosis in those sites. • Identify the main circulating serogroups of Leptospira , in order to understand the most probable routes of human exposure. • Review different laboratory testing methods and recommend feasible and reliable methods for differents levels of laboratories. • Advocate public health significance of leptospirosis among national and international decision makers.
Target candidates: The program is designed to enable participants to become familiar with leptospirosis. The course is addressed to medical and scientific candidates with strong interest in this zoonosis. In addition to theoretical courses and practical sessions, open discussions will be held aiming to encourage interactions between participants on topics related to the subjects of the course (workshops sessions).
Place: Nouméa (New Caledonia, South Pacific). Conferences and workshops will be held at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC). Practical courses will be held at the Institut Pasteur of New Caledonia (IPNC).
Number of students: The number of participants is limited to 12. Priority will be given to students from Asia and Oceania. Candidates of other countries are also encouraged to apply.
Length: 7 days full time (5 days conferences and workshops, 2 days practical courses)
Languages: French and English (possibility of simultaneous translation)
