Surveillance & operational research / Laboratory strengthening

The Surveillance & operational reserach and the Laboratory strengthening teams are part of the Research, Evidence and Information Programme (REI) of the Public Health Division (PHD) of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community. The Research, Evidence and Information Programme is also the Focal Point of the Coordinating Body of the Pacific Public Health Surveillance Network (PPHSN).

Our first priorities are those of the network: communicable diseases, especially the outbreak-prone ones. At this stage our target diseases include: dengue, measles, rubella, influenza, leptospirosis, typhoid fever, cholera and HIV/STIs.

Almost three months after Cyclone Pam descended upon Vanuatu, the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and their partners continue to monitor, investigate and respond to potential disease outbreaks across the country.

Chikungunya virus has now reached half of the Pacific Islands

The chikungunya virus has now reached half of the Pacific Island countries and territories and is likely to continue spreading to non-affected countries in the region and other parts of the world.

Surveillance experts at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) closely monitor this emerging disease in collaboration with countries, territories and regional partners of the Pacific Public Health Surveillance Network.

World-first musculoskeletal health pilot in Solomon Islands

In a world-first, a survey module about back pain, arthritis and other musculoskeletal health problems is being piloted in the Solomon Islands national Demographic and Health Survey this month.

The musculoskeletal survey module has been developed by the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC).

SPC lends public health surveillance helping hand to Vanuatu

Three public health experts from the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) will head to Port Vila and Pentecost Island this weekend to support Vanuatu’s Ministry of Health with the surveillance, diagnosis and response to diseases with epidemic potential and other public health emergencies.

SPC will initially deploy two epidemiologists and one laboratory specialist following a request from the Vanuatu Government and the World Health Organisation (WHO) for assistance over the next two months.
