The Surveillance & operational reserach and the Laboratory strengthening teams are part of the Health Protection Programme (HPP) of the Public Health Division (PHD) of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community. The Health Protection Programme is also the Focal Point of the Coordinating Body of the Pacific Public Health Surveillance Network (PPHSN).
Our first priorities are those of the network: communicable diseases, especially the outbreak-prone ones. At this stage our target diseases include: dengue, measles, rubella, influenza, leptospirosis, typhoid fever, cholera and HIV/STIs.
Our mandate is the PHD Strategic Plan. The Health Protection Programme is also the Focal Point of the Coordinating Body of the Pacific Public Health Surveillance Network (PPHSN), with the directions of the PPHSN approved by the annual meeting of the PPHSN Coordinating Body.
Funding and partners:
The work programme is funded by project-specific funding provided by various donors including AusAID, France, New Zealand Aid Porgramme and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Most of the activities are undertaken in partnership with PPHSN core and allied members within the framework of the network.
