HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, Aug. 29, 2008) - A tornado left more than 200 people homeless at Muki village in East Are Are on Malaita on Thursday morning.

The National Disaster Management Office received reports on this on Thursday. [PIR editor’s note: Malaita, the largest and most populace of the Solomon Islands, is located northeast of Guadalcanal, the country’s main island and home to its capital, Honiara.] It said those affected need immediate food, shelter and repair of their damaged water supplies. No one was killed.

A helicopter surveillance team dispatched by Police and the disaster office on Thursday afternoon turned back at Auki due to very poor weather conditions. It will make another attempt on Friday with limited shelter for those affected. [more]
