04 SEPTEMBER 2008 PORT MORESBY (Pacnews) ------ A paper on climate change and its effects on the Carterets Islands of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) will be presented at the national conference on human rights next week, reports Post Courier.

This will be among many human rights issues to be discussed at the two-day conference at the Holiday Inn in Port Moresby. The conference, the first of its kind to be organised by the Individual Community Rights Advocacy (ICRAF), will be attended by 300 people from PNG as well as international organisations such as the Latin American Human Rights Commission; The Human Rights Unit of the Commonwealth Secretariat, London, The African Commission for Human and Peoples Rights, the Amnesty International as well as a representative from Asia to give an Asian perspective.

ICRAF chairwoman Freda Talao said the conference was being organised under the theme; “33 Years of Independence. Where are we in terms of human rights in PNG?”.

“Politicians, legislators, the judiciary, the magisterial services, academia, government bureaucrats, media, faith-based organisations, and civil society will have a frank and open reflection on our past efforts in the human rights agenda and collectively set the agenda for the future of this country as regards the human areas of priority,’’ Ms Talao said.

This year, she said, was also a significant year on the human rights agenda and calendar as it marked 60 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Since UDHR was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1948, several other human rights instruments have been adopted at the international and regional levels.

PNG has signed and ratified three of these international conventions, including the Convention of the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) but the initial report on the convention to the UN has yet to be prepared by this country…….PNS (ENDS)
