PNG dismisses Taiwan's diplomatic moves 08 MAY 2008 PORT MORESBY (Pacnews) -----Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) foreign minister says any attempt by Taiwan to convince his government to give it diplomatic recognition is doomed to failure, Radio Australia reports.

In 2006, $US30 million was to be used as an incentive to Papua New Guinea to change allegiance from mainland China to Taiwan.

But one of the men representing Taiwan disappeared with the money and so far the scandal has led to the resignation of three Taiwanese ministers.

PNG's foreign minister Sam Abal said the effort was wasted.

“We recognise the People's Republic of China. That has not changed even now. So if some people have been flogging the position of PNG, definitely they do not have the support of the cabinet, or the government.”…PNS (ENDS)
