Annual Paid Employment 2006[p]

Provisional 2006 Annual Employment Survey showed that paid employment in registered establishments at the end of June 2006 was 134,854. The count is 7.7 percent or 9,651 higher than the count of 125,203 recorded in December 2005.

Of the total, 88,366 (65.5%) were males, 46,488 (34.5%) were females while 83,311 (61.8%) were wage earners and 51,543 (38.2%) were salary earners.

There was marked variation in changes to the employment numbers by industry when comparing to the December 2005 count with growth recorded in: Financial and Business Services by 20.6% [from 7,782 to 9,388], Transport and Communication by 17.9% [from 9,184 to 10,828] and Agriculture by 15.5% [from 1389 to 1604]. A decline of 14.8 % however was recorded in the Electricity and Water industry [from 2650 in 2005 to 2258 in 2006].

There was a marked increase in the number of Indian females in 2006. This was an increase of 21.1 percent, from 16,832 in 2005 to 20,390 in 2006. For Fijians, there was a decline of 3.9 percent in males in 2006, from 40,923 in 2005 to 39,328 in 2006.
