SEPTEMBER QUARTER 2006

NOTES ON THE MOVEMENT OF THE INDEXES

Headline CPI
The CPI shows 3.3% in September quarter 2006, compared to 0.8% in June quarter of the same year.  The CPI headline index also shows an annual change of 5.3% from 1.4% over 12 months from September quarter 2005 to September quarter 2006.   

The quarterly change in the CPI for all towns shows:

2.9% for Port Moresby,

bullet

8.6% for Goroka,

bullet

4.0% for Lae, 

bullet

0.9% for Madang, 

bullet

-0.1% for Rabaul

 Considering the quarterly change in the CPI by major expenditure group shows:

Food group shows 5.6%

bullet

Drinks, Tobacco and Betel Nut shows 4.3%

bullet

Clothing and Footwear Group -2.8%.

bullet

Rent, Council Charges, Fuel and Power shows 4.5%,

bullet

Household Equipment and Operations shows 0.9% 

bullet

Transport and Communication shows -0.3%,

bullet

Miscellaneous Group shows -1.7%.
 

Underlying CPI
The underlying rate of inflation shows -1.1% in September quarter 2006 compared to 0.8% in June quarter of the same year.  The underlying CPI also recorded 0.4% over 12 months from September quarter 2005 to September quarter 200
6.  The quarterly underlying CPI excluding base measures are:
