Press Release - Population Census 2006
Highlights
A preliminary Count of the 2006 population Census showed Tonga's population grew by 3.4% over the past 10 years.
The Statistics Department is pleased to release the preliminary count of 101,134 persons living in the kingdom
during the Census night of 30 November 2006, according to the Census of Population and Hosuing conducted by the department. This count
represents an increase of 3.4% from the total population of 97,784 in 1996 Census or an annual growth of 0.34%. This total comprised of
51,197 males or (50.6%) and 49,937 females or (49.4%).
This Census preliminary count shows the distribution of the country's population by island division as follows;

Tongatapu has recorded a predominant share of 70% of the total population, followed by Vava’u (15%), Ha’apai (7%), ‘Eua (5%)
and the Niuas (2%).
The population growth over the past 10 years by island division, Tongatapu and ‘Eua show the population growths of 6% and 5%
respectively between 1996 and 2006, where as Vava’u, Ha’apai and the Niuas contribute negative growths of 2%, 7% and 18%
respectively between the same period.
