Census and Surveys

The first population census in the Marshall islands was conducted in 1920, after which censuses were conducted after every five years up to 1935 when World war II disrupted its pattern. The first census after World war II was conducted in 1958, followed by censuses in 1967, 1973, 1980 and 1988.

The 1999 Census of population and Housing of the RMI is the tenth census conducted since 1920 and the second since RMI gained independence.

The EPPSO intends to provide access to as many of its census reports as much as it can. However, some reports from previous censuses are not currently available. These reports can be accessed at the US Bureau of Census or The Pacific Web.

While the focus of the information provided here is on the results of the '1999 census', a number of tables do contain data from previous censuses for comparison purposes. It is EPPSO's plan to ensure results of future censuses get disseminated in this website inclusing any special reports produced using the census data.

Sample Surveys such as 'Household Income and Expenditure Surveys (HIES)' are conducted at ad-hoc intervals, partly because they are expensive and complex to carry out and therefore require financial and technical support. A number of surveys have been conducted by EPPSO and reports on each of these are available in this website.

A major undertaking currently taking place is the 'Demographic and Health Survey (DHS). Analysis of the survey results is currently in progress and progress on this exercise will be posted in this website. Provisional results will also be available in this website until a final report is available which will get disseminated as well.
