Information Management Services The Statistical Service Division consists of three branches, the Information Management Services Branch, Administration Branch, and the Research & Statistical Coordination Branch. This Division's role is to ensure that the NSO operates efficiently in the provision of budgeting, financial management, administration support services, computer services, statistical information services, research and coordination of statistical activities. It provides the support services to the other two (2) Divisions, through these Branches, INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SERVICES BRANCH This Branch is responsible for the processing of the statistical information, identify the relevant computer software package, the maintenance of the computer equipment and as well as the processing of the statistical information. It is currently operating on a very thin staff establishment. The 1998 staff on strength was five (5). Despite this staff shortage, the Branch managed to provide a problem free service to the NSO whilst at the same time, maintaining and enhancing all the computer applications. PUBLICATION AND LIBRARY SERVICES BRANCH This Branch is responsible for storage and as well as publication and distribution of the statistical bulletins. The marketing of statistical products is the responsibility of this branch. This particular Branch provides customer services and all queries relating to statistical information are served at this Branch. The branch is also responsible for the design and development of the NSO internet homepage. Users will be advised of the new address as soon as services are available. ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES BRANCH This Branch provides the administration support services to the NSO Organisation. These involves the Budgeting, Purchasing and Inventory of office equipment and supplies, Staff Salaries including staff matters, Records of the Organisation, staff development and training, and Recruitment. Additional responsibilities involves the liaison with the Provincial Statistical Officers regarding the statistical activities in the provinces and provide the logistics support, are provided by this Branch. STAFF DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING UNIT The prime purpose of training and manpower development in the NSO is to ensure that the Statistical services have access to the full range of skill personals required to exercise the functions of the NSO as far as possible within the scope of the stated mission. An additional purpose is to ensure that each member of the staff is adequately train to meet new challenges ahead. Training and Manpower Development of the NSO was a continuous activity of NSO in 1998. The NSO is fortunate that most of its Training Awards and Fellowships are provided externally by donors like AUSAID, the UN agencies, JICA, SPC, ADB, EEC, and many others. As training administration is a major component of the Division work. RESEARCH AND COORDINATION BRANCH As a result of the current Restructure this Branch was created to fill the gap NSO was struggling to fill particularly providing research into the needs of the statistical users, and as well as make provision for effective coordination of statistical activities both within the country and with overseas statistical Organisations. The needs of the statistical users are quite important in the planning of NSO work so that relevant statistical information is made available to them. Co-ordinations of statistical activities and effective means of providing statistical information to UN and other statistical agencies are also the responsibility of this Branch, including the development of the statistical standards. This includes the coding for the Industrial and Occupational classifications, and statistical data dictionary for PNG Censuses Surveys. |
