cook islands statistics office plans to provide training attachment

The best way to strengthen working relationship with other government departments and agencies

In order to strengthen working relationship with other Government departments, non government organisations and other agencies who are involved in data collection and compilation, the Cook Islands Statistics Office (CISO) believes this can be effectively achieved through sharing and exchanging of statistical skills and knowledge. Establishing good statistical networking relationship will improve the country's National Statistical System (NSS). Therefore access to a wide range of statistical information can be enhanced and users needs are better met.

This is what the CISO is planning to embark on in early 2007. A staff from the 'Ministry of Education' will be undertaking an attachment training with the CISO over a period of six months (still to be negotiated). The staff will be exposed to a wide range of activities undertaken by the Office ranging from data collection, processing, tabulation and reporting; exposed to and use of the different types of databases currently used by the Office and other areas where relevant with a priority in ensuring that the trainee and the Department's needs are met.

During the attachment period, it is an opportunity for CISO staff to learn about statistical activities are carried out within the department of education. Now that MDG framework is becoming an integral part of the National Strategic Plan, education indicators play a very important role in measuring the progress of implementing this framework.

The CISO would like to to see this approach expand to include other departments and agencies in future.
