Provisional figure for December 2008 saw resident departure at its highest
(1,695). This is due to the number of Cook Islanders travelling
to New Zealand and Australia mostly to visit friends and relatives. This was a 56.6% increase in resident
departures when compared to last month and a slight increase of 3.7% when compared to December 2007, with a net
outward migration of 663.
Of the 9,163 total arrivals in December 2008, 8,131 were visitors and 1,032 returning Cook Islands residents. There were 7,074 departures in December with 1,695 being Cook Islands residents who either left on vacation, for business reasons, or permanently.
The December month saw a 12.3% decrease in visitor arrivals when compared to the same period the previous year. On a quarterly basis, the December quarter of 2008 decreased by 2.6% when compared to the same quarter the previous year. The year 2008 saw 94,152 visitor arrivals to the Cook Islands, a 3.1% decrease over 2007.
People arriving for vacation during the month of December contributed 64.3% of the visitor arrivals while 30.9% visitors came to visit their friends and relations. Over 40% of the visitor arrivals stayed in Hotels and Motels while 41.6% stayed in private accommodations. The average length of stay for visitors during this month was 14 days. The longest average stay of 23 days were topped by visitors from Australia followed by visitors from New Zealand and Other countries with 21, while visitors from Asia and French Polynesia had the shortest average stay of 8 days.
