The selection of items in the new basket was made from the 2005 Censuses of Mining & Quarrying, Manufacturing and Electricity & Water and
accounts for the total value added of these industries in 2005. COMPILATION GUIDE: INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION INDEX [BASE 2005 = 100.0] can be
referred to for specific details on the compilation methodology..
HIGHLIGHTS
2006 shows:
- increases in the indices of dairy products, grain mill products and starch products as these commodities are market driven and their production
largely depend on stock held; basic metals and fabricated metals excluding machinery and equipment due to the increase in the construction activity during
the year; and coachwork, furniture made of wood and water.
- decline in the indices of mining & quarrying mainly due to the low production of gold due to the depleting ore surface; wearing apparel due to a decline
in orders from overseas markets; and furniture made of metals, and other manufacturing nec.
2007 shows,
- increases in the indices of beverages due to an increase in the production of non-alcoholic drinks, and leather products including footwear as there was
an increase in orders for footwear from both overseas and local markets
- decline in the indices of sugar, canned fish, animal feed and starch products as these commodities are market driven and their production depends on stock held;
basic metals, fabricated metals excluding machinery & equipment due mainly to a decline in the construction activity; coachwork and mining & quarrying. Gold mining
operations ceased in December 2006. Except for leftover ores that were extracted in 2006 being processed into bullions, mainly repairs and maintenance works were
carried out by the new owners in 2007
2008 shows
- increases in the indices of mining & quarrying due to the re-opening of the gold mine; animal feed, manufacture of machinery & equipment nec, furniture made of
any other material other than wood and metal and other manufacturing nec
- declines in the indices of leather products including footwear, wood & wood products, fabricated metals except machinery & equipment, coachwork, furniture made
of wood and upholstery
IPI for Quarters 1 and 2 will be released in September 2009.
