Technical assistance to assist in estimating GDP for Niue

The latest GDP estimate for Niue was for the year 2003. Statistics New Zealand provided assistance to produce this estimate. Since then, no figures on the country's GDP were ever made available.

This technical assistance was made following Niue's request to the SPC Statistics and Demography Programme (SDP) to assist Statistics Niue in the estimation of GDP at least on an annual basis or whenever the necessary data are available.

Mr. Alick Nyasulu, an economic Statistician within the SPC Statistics and Demography Programme visited the Statistics Niue office for a week from 20 - 26 June 2009. This visit was focused on compiling GDP estimates for Niue after 2003 and re-looking at the current system used for the estimation of Niue's GDP.

At the end of the week and the hard yard put in by Alick with the assistance from various Government departments and organisations the objectives of the TA was successfully achieved with the GDP Estimates of Niue for years 2004 to 2006 being realised. And the system used for the compilation was still valid except for a few things to be addressed such as the contributions from the private sector and the subsistence sector.
