At the triennial Regional Meeting of Heads of Statistics
(RMHS) in 2000, NSO representatives recommended that SPC's
Statistics Programme concentrate resources on assisting NSOs in
strengthening their Internet presence, particularly with regard to
disseminating key national data. This directive led to the
Regional Pacific Information SysteM (PRISM) with funding from the United
Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID).
The PNG National Statistics Office welcomes this
initiative. It sees it as an opportunity that contributes to a better
dissemination of its statistical outputs at national, regional and

developed by the NSO webmaster, Mr. Leslie Wongo. It is currently
undergoing review and finalisation with assistance provided by the Mr.
Raymond VUTI, manger for the PRISM project.

The main purpose of the HIES (Household Income and Expenditure
Survey) is to provide more up-to-date information about the average
spending of urban Papua New Guinean households for use in determining
the composition of the "basket of goods and services" to which
the Consumer Price Index relates.
A secondary purpose is to obtain related information on income
distribution, housing and other socio-economic conditions of national
living in selected towns.
Previously, the Survey used to be called Household Expenditure Survey (HES).
The DHS 2006 for Morobe Province was
launched on Wednesday 19th April (2006) in Lae by Mr. Abraham Masu the
Acting Deputy National Statistician from the National Statistical Office.
This important survey will be very helpful
in compiling data for formulation of national policies.
